    This modest Dutchman is such a firm believer in the traditional way his country plays soccer that he tries to pass it on to the teams he coaches — from Madrid to Seoul to Sydney to Moscow.
    Without a single element of self-praise, he truly believes that his Russian team played better Dutch football than the Dutch.
    "What the boys did tonight, their commitment, to outplay tactically, physically a Dutch team," he said. "After the game I don't want to talk in big words — but it's a miracle. It's super what the guys did. Super.
    "I said, 'Hey, we can do it,' because tactically, physically, technically this Russian team is a better team than the Dutch team. You see the passing and the controlling. So we were dominant and I am very happy and very proud of this team."
    Hiddink has taught these young Russians how to move the ball entertainingly but effectively through the midfield, and provide possession to forwards who go straight for the goal. It's the sort of football the Dutch have been playing for decades, though with less success than they deserve.
    The Dutch team he beat had plenty of attacking stars who looked capable of going all the way to the title. They beat World Cup holder Italy 3-0 and France 4-1, with top quality goals and imaginative play under Van Basten.
    But the former AC Milan striker, one of the game's greats with the ball at his feet, still seems to struggle when it comes to teaching his countrymen what to do with it. This result underlines his problem.
    He had made all three substitutions by the 62nd minute and, even if one may have been because of injury, it was a strange decision with the likelihood the game would go to extra time. Hiddink didn't make his second substitution until the 81st, and the player he sent on, Dmitry Torbinski, scored the go-ahead goal for 2-1 in extra time. His third replacement came with five minutes left in extra time, just before the third Russian goal by star Andrei Arshavin.
    Hiddink managed his players better than Van Basten handled his. Plus, the Netherlands coach had to send out a team without Arjen Robben, who was sidelined with a groin injury,
    By pure coincidence, Russia also gained some payback over Van Basten, whose amazing goal against the Soviet Union in the 1988 final in Munich helped the Dutch capture their only European crown. Van Basten steps down after this championship, while Hiddink, who led South Korea to a World Cup semifinal six years ago, and Australia to the second round of the World Cup in 2006, goes on to even more success.
    In a championship which is taking unexpected twists every day, Russia now faces either Spain or Italy for a place in the final against either Germany or another upstart, Turkey.
    The Spaniards play their quarterfinal against the Italians in Vienna on Sunday and, if the pattern continues, will be another group winner to will lose; Spain took Group D, Italy was second in Group C. The same happened for Group A winner Portugal, which lost 3-2 to Germany, and Group B winner Croatia, which went out in a penalty-kick shootout to Turkey.
    The Netherlands topped its group after three victories, and Russia started its campaign with a 4-1 loss to Spain.
    At this rate, watch out for Turkey beating the Germans and maybe Russia ousting World Cup holder Italy in the semifinals.
    This European Championship title could well go to Hiddink, made in the Netherlands after all.
